Oliver Tree Nickell was born on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, California. Long before taking over the music world with his genre-bending mix of pop, indie rock, and electronic music, he was a deeply creative kid who started playing the piano at age three. He spent his youth immersed in art, jazz bands, and competitive freestyle scooter riding. Oliver was scooting professionally with his sponser the Junior Syndicate Scooter Team, when he eventually was involved in a brutal scoot crash that broke several bones and prompted a career change. Oliver was also a DJ in his youth, playing shows and securing spots in music festivals by age 17.
Starting his online career as just Tree, he broke onto the internet scene with his viral scooter trick videos and quirky performance art before releasing his debut EP *Alien Boy* in 2018. Known for creating elaborate fictional personas, dramatic music videos, and his trademark oversized pants and 90's jacket- paired with sunglasses and an epic bowl cut- Oliver was a one in a million kind of artist.
Tragically, Oliver passed away on June 14, 2026, at the age of 32 following a mid-air helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while on his world tour. His creativity, humor, and massive impact on music and culture will live on through his fans and his art forever. In his honor, his family and team created his vision of "Dr. Oliver Tree's Extremely Epic Art Grant For Baby Geniuses", to help artists secure funds to create their art.
